‘Perennial losers’: Tottenham stars called out as pundit issues strong Mourinho defence
Tottenham have been branded ‘perennial losers’ by Simon Jordan.
The former Crystal Palace chairman was scathing in his appraisal of Jose Mourinho’s side, while issuing a staunch defence of the under-fire manager.
An inconsistent campaign has left Tottenham sitting sixth in the Premier League, three points behind fourth-placed West Ham and only ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.
Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle means they’ve won just one of their last four matches, a run that’s included a 2-1 defeat against Arsenal and humiliating 3-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League.
Mourinho has attracted criticism over his comments in the wake of the Newcastle match. Asked on B who was to blame for letting leads slip, Mourinho replied: “Same coach, different players.”
Those comments didn’t sit well with talkSPORT host Jim White, but Jordan believes the fault does indeed lie with the players and pointed to Mourinho’s managerial track record.
Speaking on , Jordan said: “Let’s look at the reality of what’s being alleged of Mourinho.
“Someone asks him a question, okay. He gives a factual answer. It’s a factual answer.
“It’s factual isn’t it. ‘Jose, what happens to teams, that you used to be very good at defending a lead?’. ‘Same coach’? Fact. ‘Different players’? Fact.
“You want to turn that into some sinister, macabre, pretentious observation of throwing his players under the bus. The same players, by the way, that he defends quite regularly, but that doesn’t get written about in quite the same flourishing style.”
Host Jim White interjected to call that “Absolute nonsense”, adding: “How can you prove that?”.
Jordan replied: “I’ve seen the articles. I’ve seen these headlines. We don’t see the headlines saying ‘Spurs delight’ when Mourinho’s praising his players, and the same players by the way, that were an absolute disgrace against Dinamo Zagreb, suddenly now are furious because their coach has made a factual observation.
“A bunch of perennial losers, that haven’t won anything, that have been knocked out of FA Cup semi-finals regularly, that have got to the Champions League final and stuck the tournament final out, that should have won the league when Leicester City won it.
“Maybe, just maybe, there should have been a change. I’m not suggesting that this constant negative reinforcement at times of points from Mourinho is the right way to go, but to suggest that Mourinho, who has won something at every single club – that’s a matter of fact, you don’t like that matter of fact but it’s a matter of fact – he has won something at every single club. Every single club.
“And Tottenham aren’t good enough.”
