‘People at Tottenham were baffled’: Journalist shares what he was told about Nuno Espirito Santo at Spurs
Nuno Espirito Santo’s spell at Tottenham almost feels like a bit of a fever dream.
The Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte eras at Spurs are referenced so often, but Nuno is just glossed over as if he was never even there.
The new Nottingham Forest boss did, in fact, spend a few months at Spurs back in 2021, and it’s fair to say things didn’t go to plan.
He was sacked before Christmas, and there’s an element of mystery around where it all went wrong for the former Wolves boss in north London.
Speaking on the , Ian Ladyman has been discussing Nuno’s time at Spurs after he returned to England with Nottingham Forest, and he says that he was told people at Spurs were baffled by how flat Nuno was in this job.

Nuno had no energy
Ladyman shared what he’d heard from within Tottenham about Nuno.
“It was almost like a fire went out. By the time he got to Tottenham and I know this from people I know very well at Tottenham, he was like a different person, he was non-communicative, he was flat, he had no energy. It was almost as if he went to Tottenham too soon after being sacked by Wolves, because they couldn’t believe the character. His demeanour was wrong, people at Tottenham were baffled because this wasn’t the person they interviewed, the guy they saw at Wolves or the guy they had good references about, he was almost like a shell of himself,” Ladyman said.
Strange
It’s so strange to hear that Nuno was like this at Tottenham.
You would’ve thought he would’ve been full of energy around this time at Spurs. After all, he’d just landed a huge job, and he got off to a really good start with three consecutive wins.
Of course, it’s tough to get your head straight when you leave a club like Wolves after so many years of good service, but the excitement, challenge and promise of a club like Tottenham really should’ve had Nuno raring to go and excited to go to work everyday.
However, it’s clear that something wasn’t right with Nuno as he seemed to go within himself at Tottenham, and, ultimately, that cost him his job.
Let’s hope Nuno is back to his old self as he takes the Nottingham Forest job.
