Paul Scholes suggests Liverpool really should have signed £42m Bayern Munich player this summer

Even Liverpool fans will agree that Paul Scholes is one of the best midfielders the Premier League has ever seen.

The Englishman, a Manchester United legend, played a big part in the rivalry between the Red Devils and Liverpool over the years.

He was a truly magnificent player, and there are very few people who can judge midfielders better than he can.

Now, Scholes has had his say on Liverpool’s midfield issues, and he believes the Reds missed out on a player who would’ve been perfect for them.

Paul Scholes says Liverpool should’ve signed Joao Palhinha

Joao Palhinha was among the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League during his time at Fulham.

The Portugal international was amazing for the Cottagers, and his performances earned him a ton of plaudits. Several big clubs wanted to sign him as well.

When Jurgen Klopp was still the manager, Liverpool were heavily linked with a move to sign Palhinha, but no move materialised.

Earlier this summer, Vincent Kompany made the midfielder his number one target, and Bayern Munich completed a deal to sign him for an initial £42.3 million ().

Scholes, a legendary midfielder himself, watched Palhinha in action multiple times for club and country, and he has now claimed that the Bayern Munich man would’ve been a great fit at Liverpool.

However, the Reds have no chance of landing him now – at least not in this window.

Scholes said on : “I think Liverpool in that area of the pitch [midfield] have some really good players. There is Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones, Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Mac Allister we have not even spoke about.

“I think it’s important they add someone solid. In an ideal world, we have all talked about Rodri, he’s the best in the world at doing it. But there were players they could have gone for.

“You think of the lad at Fulham who went to Bayern Munich, Palhinha. I thought he was brilliant at the World Cup. I thought he was one who could possibly have gone to Liverpool, just to sort everything out in the middle of the pitch and let the rest of the players play.”

Liverpool could be about to solve their midfield issue

It is no secret that a new defensive midfielder is the priority for Liverpool.

The Reds have struggled in that position since Fabinho left the club, and although Mac Allister has done a decent job there, they need a specialist.

Arne Slot is on the market for a new midfielder, and it looks like Martin Zubimendi is Liverpool’s top target to strengthen the middle of their park.

David Ornstein has revealed that Real Sociedad expect Zubimendi to accept Liverpool’s offer – all that’s left is for the two clubs to strike a deal.

Zubimendi, in our opinion, would be a brilliant signing for Liverpool.
