Paul Scholes has big question marks over one Aston Villa signing this summer
The summer transfer window closes in just over three weeks time, and as it stands, Aston Villa have spent the most out of any team in Europe.
Big deals for the likes of Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen and Samuel Iling-Junior have seen Villa’s overall expenditure cross the £150m mark, with Unai Emery also bringing back Cameron Archer and Jaden Philogene for serious fees.
Whilst there have been deals to sell Douglas Luiz, Moussa Diaby and Omari Kellyman, the Villa Park side’s moves this summer have caught many by surprise, with Villa also keen on bidding for Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix.
Yet Paul Scholes has highlighted one signing that he is not too sold on.

Scholes unconvinced on Aston Villa’s move for Amadou Onana
Speaking on , the Manchester United legend shared his concerns on Onana and how the midfielder could replace Luiz, with Scholes admitting that he isn’t sure how the Belgian can operate in the no. 6 role.
Scholes said when asked about Villa have gone about replacing Luiz this summer: “With Douglas Luiz, he had to go for financial reasons, but I think he will be a big miss. I thought that he was brilliant for them. Who comes in to replace him?
“Tielemans is a bit inconsistent but he is a really good player. But he’s not that no. 6 footballer, he’s one who more likes to get forward. I don’t really see the Onana thing, I’ve not seen him while he’s been at Everton. I didn’t see it with Belgium either.
“When they spent £50m for him, I thought that seemed a bit too much. Now Emery being the manager he is, he might get something out of him, it might be a club that suits him, but where I’m stood right now, £50m seems like a lot of money.”

Onana will be itching to show Scholes up next season
Scholes’ comments on Onana are unusual, to say the least, with the Belgian international rightly considered one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League and a player who can develop even further beyond his current skillset.
There’s good reason why Villa surprised everyone by moving stealthily to sign Onana, who for £50m could prove to be an incredible addition for Emery’s squad heading into a UEFA Champions League season.
Indeed, Scholes is seemingly unaware of what Onana is best at despite being a star for Everton for the past two seasons, and the former LOSC Lille star will be eager to show the Premier League legend what he’s made of in the upcoming campaign.
