Paul Robinson slams Serge Aurier’s display in Spurs defeat
Paul Robinson has that Serge Aurier was terrible in Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.
Spurs have, once again, given themselves an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. Bayern ran out 7-2 winners at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Serge Gnabry bagging four goals during the second-half.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men had played extremely well during the first-half. And they were perhaps unlucky to go into the break behind with Robert Lewandowski finding the bottom corner just before the whistle went.
But Bayern blew the Premier League side away in the second-half. And one of the reasons that the Bavarian outfit, and particularly Gnabry, did enjoy such success was because of Aurier’s nightmare evening.
The Ivory Coast international was caught out of position on a number of occasions. And Bayern certainly made the most of the opportunity to exploit the space down Spurs’s right flank.
And Robinson was particularly scathing in his assessment of Aurier’s performance, with the former Tottenham goalkeeper hinting that no player on the pitch should shoulder more blame than the full-back.
“He had a terrible game at right-back. There was so much space in behind him,” . “Gnabry was playing one-twos with Pavard all through the second-half and was getting it every single time.
“So when that happens as a full-back, you think, ‘I’m getting done here a couple of times, I’m going to drop five yards and I’m going to give myself a chance because I’m getting done in behind me here’.”
TBR’s View
It has been a turbulent season for Aurier. Pochettino eventually turned to the former Paris Saint-Germain man after previously overlooking him. And initially, Spurs fans were left wondering why he had not been involved in the first weeks of the campaign, particularly after an outstanding display against Crystal Palace.
However, that positivity has largely given way to severe criticism more recently. He was sent off against Southampton at the weekend, and this display against Bayern was incredibly alarming.
Aurier was not the only player to let Tottenham down on Tuesday night. But perhaps it is fair to say that no player has more to do to now make it up to the Spurs supporters.
