Paul Robinson discusses reported Real Madrid interest in Tottenham star Christian Eriksen

that Tottenham Hotspur may have to sell Christian Eriksen before January if they cannot agree a deal for the playmaker, and believes Spurs could be willing to cash in.

Eriksen, 27, scored a superb left-footed effort from all of 25 yards on Tuesday night, as Tottenham earned a late 1-0 win over Brighton. He has nine goals for the season, and 17 assists.

However, he looks set to enter the final 12 months of his contract, which expires in the summer of 2020. Mauricio Pochettino stated Eriksen is in talks with the club, but Real Madrid have been repeatedly linked with Eriksen.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Robinson reckons contract talks with Eriksen may have taken a long time due to the Dane’s financial ambitions – and reckons Spurs will be happy to sell if they cannot agree a deal.

“You can’t let a player of his quality go into the final year of his contract,” “Come January, he can speak to European teams. They’re obviously talking, because Tottenham won’t want him to leave, at all.

“A player of his quality and ambition, there will be no shortage of suitors in the top European leagues. When Real Madrid come knocking, they don’t come knocking twice. It’s a one-off chance for him to go.

“Tottenham have proved in the past they are willing to sell players. The club have to financially match his own ambition, which is probably why it has taken so long in contract negotiations.”

TBR’s view

Eriksen is a wonderful player and certainly provides Spurs with a creative spark from midfield. Without him, they would be a much worse side, one lacking in the ability to overcome a team like Brighton who are willing to draw.

Spurs must make a decision on his future now, though. With the summer looming, Pochettino and chairman Daniel Levy must choose whether to risk losing him for nothing next January, or sell him this summer for a fee.

Leave it until after this window, and Spurs will not have a choice.
