Arsenal tipped to sign ‘unplayable’ £40m talent this summer as replacement for Unai Emery signing

It’s that time again it seems, when someone thinks Arsenal should go out and sign Wilfried Zaha from Crystal Palace as a new transfer window rapidly approaches.

This time it’s come from former Arsenal midfielder, Paul Merson. The regular Sky Sports pundit, writing in his column for the , believes Arsenal should go out and sign Zaha to replace Nicolas Pepe.

Of course, Arsenal’s interest in Zaha is long-standing. He was with a whopping £80m move to the Gunners not so long back, while Tottenham and Chelsea have also registered an interest. And according to Merson, the Gunners need to be going back for Zaha this summer if they can.

“Arsenal should go back in for Wilfried Zaha and try to sign him from Crystal Palace this summer. They wanted him before and missed out. But Zaha wanted to join them, and he won’t stay at Palace forever. I think he would have made a difference to Arsenal,” Merson told the .

Previously as an ‘unplayable’ player, Zaha has spent his career with Palace, barring a move to Manchester United which didn’t work out. He has long been considered someone who can step up to a top four club, however, has yet to make the grade or move required.

TBR’s View: Zaha To Arsenal Ship Has Sailed

A few years ago this might have happened but you have to say that the ship has surely sailed with this one. Zaha is now 29 and put simply, doesn’t fit the mold of what Arsenal are doing.

Likewise, he brings the same inconsistencies to the table that Pepe does. Yes, Zaha is a good player, but the Gunners would be getting a 29-year-old with no sell-on value who can fall short.

This ship has sailed a long time ago and while Merson makes a valid point, Zaha will likely be with Palace forever now.
