Paul Merson very unhappy with £150,000-a-week Arsenal player

Paul Merson has now expressed his disappointment with Arsenal defender Ben White after he decided not to play for England.

The 55-year-old made the comments when speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.

So, what did Paul Merson say about Arsenal No.4 Ben White? Let’s take a look…

Paul Merson upset with Ben White

Well, the man from Harlesden conceded that the defender can do what he wants with his life, but could not understand his decision to snub England.

Merson : “We play football to go to tournaments… play in a World Cup or the Euros, and England have got big chances of winning. Why would you not want to go? And when Gareth (Southgate) goes, the next manager will be the same, he’ll go woah.

“He’s playing in the Champions League. He’s playing at the top of the league. Everything is going great, don’t close that opportunity. It’s his life, he can do what he wants – you know – but this is what we play for.”

Ian Wright has also previously criticised those who refuse to play for England.

Southgate revealed earlier this week that Edu – Director of Football at Arsenal – called him to say that White would prefer not to be selected for international duty this month.

It comes after the England international had an alleged bust up with Steve Holland before departing the 2022 World Cup camp in Qatar, although Southgate did move to quash that particular story.

Arsenal must protect 26-year-old

Some may recall how the media and football fans treated Raheem Sterling after Roy Hodgson the winger was “too tired” to play for England back in 2014.

The Chelsea No.7 received awful treatment, so White should expect some boos for going one further and actually refusing to even join up with the squad.

These potential boos could distract the 26-year-old during the title race, so Arsenal must do whatever they can to protect him and ensure he remains focused on the task at hand, with the UEFA Champions League also up for grabs this season.
