Paul Merson tells Arsenal to go and sign £80m striker after seeing them lose at Fulham

Paul Merson has told Arsenal that they have to go and get Ivan Toney after watching them lose to Fulham today.

The Gunners ended 2023 in poor form and lost to the Cottagers in comfortable fashion to make it two defeats against London teams in a week.

Mikel Arteta will be hugely disappointed in his side’s latest effort and he will be hoping the Arsenal board no back him in the January window.

A striker is seen as key to helping Arsenal’s effort and a number of players, including Ivan Toney, have been linked.

And taking to just now, Merson has said that Arsenal simply have to go and sign Toney, insisting the title race is not over.

Arsenal have been missing something in attack for much of the season, with the likes of Martinelli, Jesus and Saka not quite producing as they did last term.

Toney is due back in action in January and Brentford want at least £80m to sell their star man.

Arsenal need Toney or someone else

It’s almost like some teams have found Arsenal out a bit and they are now struggling to break teams down.

Fulham did a number on them today and simply took their chances when they had them, while denying Arsenal any sort of space to get chances themselves.

It will be a concern for Arteta just how passive his team have looked lately. They don’t look like scoring unless it’s a moment of magic and that’s where a new forward comes in.

Toney would give them an added dimension in attack and allow them to play a different way. The England striker has qualities nobody else at The Emirates has and that change in dynamic could be all the difference.

Arsenal, then, as Merson says, need to go out and do business or risk throwing away another title chase.
