Paul Merson shocked Fabinho did not start in Liverpool defeat

Paul Merson that he was shocked to see Fabinho not start as Liverpool were beaten on Monday, claiming that he should have been the first name on the team sheet.

The Reds are still waiting to get their season properly off and running. Remarkably, Jurgen Klopp’s side are yet to win a single game after three in the Premier League.

And most worryingly, they were beaten at Old Trafford on Monday. Liverpool were well short of their best. And it seemed as though they were almost stunned by how energised Manchester United were.

The Reds are dealing with a number of injuries right now. So it may have surprised many when the lineup was announced and Fabinho was left on the bench.

‘Should’ve been the first name on the team sheet’

The Brazilian has not been at his best so far this term. But obviously, he has the potential to produce colossal performances for the Reds. So it was alarming that he did not start.

Certainly, Merson could not quite believe that Klopp did not use the midfielder until just before the hour-mark. He has predicted that he will straight back in for this weekend’s clash against Bournemouth.

“I was shocked that Fabinho didn’t start against Man United,” . “He should’ve been the first name on the team sheet.

“He’s definitely starting this game. You don’t need two defensive midfielders against Bournemouth, and I think Fabinho will play in his position with Van Dijk and Gomez behind him.”

Merson shocked to see Fabinho not start

Liverpool have a massive point to prove against the Cherries. And in many ways, Scott Parker would probably rather his side came up against the Reds while they are flying and potentially focusing on other things.

The Reds must win this weekend. And with the side being doubted by many, it would not be a huge surprise if they did indeed brush the newly-promoted team aside.

And it is hard to imagine Klopp not picking Fabinho in the starting lineup with a win absolutely imperative.
