Paul Merson says Tottenham may have now produced transfer masterstroke
Paul Merson believes that Tottenham Hotspur may have produced a masterstroke in the transfer market following their announcement this week.
Spurs surprised everyone by pursuing a deal for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner. Werner, of course, did not have the best time during his previous spell in the Premier League.
But Tottenham announced on Tuesday that they have signed Werner on loan. The move comes with an option to buy (via ).
Paul Merson thinks Timo Werner could be a huge success at Tottenham
It looks to be a low-risk move for Ange Postecoglou’s side. If Werner struggles to improve on what he showed during his time at Chelsea, then Tottenham are under no obligation to keep him.

But if it works out, Spurs have a potential bargain on their hands. That is why Arsenal-supporting pundit Darren Bent admitted that he felt uneasy about Tottenham signing Werner.
And speaking to , Paul Merson suggested that he could see the Germany international proving to be a real success – but only on one condition.
“Timo Werner has been the talk of the town after sealing a surprise loan move to Tottenham. I watched this guy a lot when he was at Chelsea and I can’t remember a player who was flagged offside more often than him. I can understand a striker being over-eager to get behind the backline if he’s slow, but Werner is lightning-quick, so I have no idea why he always found himself in an offside position,” he said.
“If he manages to sort out this problem, I truly think this transfer could turn out to be a masterstroke from Ange Postecoglou.”
No-brainer for Spurs
In fairness to Werner, he is far from being the only player to struggle after a big-money move to Chelsea in recent years. And actually, his record for the Blues has become a lot more reasonable in hindsight, with 44 goal involvements in 89 games in all competitions.
Admittedly, he has not set the world alight since returning to the Bundesliga. But he may actually benefit from expectations from some being very low.
It looks to be an incredibly smart move from Tottenham in this window. And if it pays off, a lot of sides are going to be wondering if they made a massive error not making a move of their own.
