Paul Merson says ‘phenomenal’ reported Arsenal target is good enough to play for Manchester City

Paul Merson thinks that any member of the so-called top six in the Premier League would want to sign Wilfried Zaha.

Zaha is reportedly a target for Arsenal, who are capable of outbidding Barcelona to sign the Crystal Palace man.

Merson told that Zaha’s future likely depends on the wages he demands as a free agent if he runs his Palace contract down.

Zaha’s deal expires in the summer, with his future at Selhurst Park still up in the air, with interest from Chelsea and Juventus too.

Merson on Zaha

He said: “Wilfried Zaha will become a free agent in 2023, and I don’t know if he’ll move to a bigger team.

“It depends on what wages he wants. I don’t think Premier League teams are going to pay a 30-year-old player three hundred grand a week.

“If his wages are reasonable, however, I’d go as far as to say that every club in the Premier League top six would want after his signature.”

Would Manchester City go in for Zaha, given their glut of wide options and their ability to go out and get almost anyone in the world?

Perhaps not, but Zaha is like Jack Grealish and Kalvin Phillips in being one of the best players outside the top six and performing at the peak of his powers.

City have signed those two from Aston Villa and Leeds, while it is hard to dispute that the rest of the division could find use for him.

It remains to be seen what the ‘phenomenal‘ forward does next but for now, he seems focused on ensuring Palace have another good season.
