Paul Merson says Man United have been linked with making a signing who’d make them even worse
Paul Merson has given his verdict on speculation linking Karim Benzema with a move to Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United in the January transfer window.
The Arsenal legend and Sky Sports pundit has noted the player who could be adversely affected if Benzema moved to Old Trafford.
So, what has Paul Merson said about Manchester United and Karim Benzema? Let’s take a look.
Paul Merson does not want Manchester United to sign Karim Benzema
Well, Paul Merson has been sharing his opinion on speculation linking Manchester United with Karim Benzema.
Rasmus Hojlund is not having the best of times at United. The striker has scored just two goals and given one assist in 13 Premier League starts for Erik ten Hag’s side this campaign.
There have been rumours in recent days suggesting that United want to sign Benzema, and former Arsenal star and Sky Sports pundit Merson has warned that signing the striker could stunt the growth of Hojlund and make the Red Devils even worse.

Merson told : “As for Benzema, I’m not sure he will come to the Premier League despite being linked with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United as he’ll want a lot of money and won’t be a long-term option.
“It screams like the kind of signing Manchester United would jump at, but they can’t keep doing what they’ve done in recent years.
“If Benzema joins United, Rasmus Hojlund will play second fiddle and that would obviously hinder his development.
“It would kind of become like the Cristiano Ronaldo situation where he came in and scored goals, but Manchester United as a team got worse!”
My View: Manchester United should avoid Karim Benzema
In my opinion, Manchester United should not sign Karim Benzema in the January transfer window, even on a loan deal until the end of the season.
Benzema is 36 now and is past his prime. The Frenchman has been playing in the Saudi Pro League for the past few months.
Of course, we know that Benzema is a legend of the game. He has been world class. During his time at Real Madrid, the striker won the La Liga title four times and the UEFA Champions League on five occasions.
But, United need to avoid signing a 36-year-old striker and look for someone who is younger and could grow as a player.
