Arsenal Transfer News: Paul Merson makes Raphinha claim as Mudryk deal collapses

Paul Merson has claimed on today that Arsenal will make a move for former Leeds winger Raphinha now, after missing out on Mykhaylo Mudryk.

Mudryk has signed for Chelsea in one of the biggest U-turns in recent transfer history. A move to Arsenal looked all but done but Chelsea swooped in, agreeing to pay Shakhtar close to the £100m they wanted all along.

The task for Arsenal now, then, is to find someone else. And Merson, speaking ahead of the NLD today, believes the Gunners will reignite their interest in Raphinha.

“100% they need to bring players in. Quality players. That’s why they went for Mudryk. I think they’ll probably go for Raphinha now at Barcelona, in my opinion. I think they’ll go for him. They need players. You watch the Newcastle game and they’ve got no one to bring on. Arsenal have earnt the right now for teams to come and sit behind the ball,” Merson said on

“They need a bit more guile. Might not just be the goal. It’s that fresh brain, sometimes. They need more players to win the Premier League. I’d be shocked if they did it with just this squad.”

TBR’s View: Raphinha would add to Arsenal’s exciting squad

It’s not really worked out brilliantly for Raphinha over in Barcelona. He’s had his moments but he’s not quite lit the world up like he did with Leeds United.

However, he is still a quality player and one Arsenal already know a lot about. He’d bring pace, trickery, and attacking intent to the Gunners. And with Barca still struggling in terms of money, a deal might be there.

Dubbed ‘amazing‘ during his time with Leeds, Raphinha would add to Arsenal’s exciting Brazilian contingent too. In terms of Mudryk alternatives, Raphinha could be the one.
