Paul Merson says 23-year-old Chelsea player needs to be just like Jorginho on Sunday
Chelsea face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, and they come into this game as underdogs.
You don’t need us to tell you that the Blues haven’t been brilliant so far this season, and they will need to be at their very best if they are to beat Liverpool on Sunday.
However, with that being said, the Reds aren’t unbeatable, as Arsenal showed just two weeks ago.
The Gunners beat the Reds at the Emirates quite comfortably, and they won that game by playing around the Liverpool press.
Jorginho put on a masterclass in midfield, and speaking to , Paul Merson has claimed that Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez needs to put on a very similar display this weekend if the west London side are to win the cup final.
Enzo Fernandez needs to play like Jorginho
Merson shared his verdict on the 23-year-old.
“Chelsea have to beat Liverpool’s press. Arsenal beat it umpteen times the Emirates the other week with Jorginho in the team,” Merson said.
“I’m not sure if they have that Jorginho figure in the team. They have Enzo Fernandez – if he can play the same as Jorginho did that day for Arsenal, then it swings the advantage to Chelsea.”
“If Curtis Jones isn’t fit, then I think Chelsea win that midfield battle.”
Not easy
It’s all well and good saying that Fernandez needs to play like Jorginho did against Liverpool, but that’s much easier said than done.
Let’s not forget, the Reds are one of the best pressing teams in the world for a reason. They can overwhelm even the best midfielders on the planet.
Jorginho is perhaps the most press-resistant footballer in the world, so he was a perfect counter to Liverpool’s style, and sadly, Fernandez is yet to show in a Chelsea shirt that he has that kind of performance up his sleeve.
If Fernandez can play in this way, Chelsea will have a great chance of winning, but producing this type of showing won’t be easy.
