Paul Merson now predicts result of Wolves vs Southampton on Saturday
Wolves can move off the bottom of the Premier League this Saturday with a victory over Southampton.
The Old Gold face a truly seismic clash in terms of their survival hopes, as Russell Martin takes his fellow strugglers to Molineux in a game many are describing as El Sackico.
Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
19 | 10 | 1 | 1 | 8 | 7 | 19 | -12 | 4 | |
20 | 10 | 0 | 3 | 7 | 14 | 27 | -13 | 3 |
TBR Football understand Wolves are likely to sack Gary O’Neil if Wolves fail to beat Southampton – while the Saints could also decide to part ways with Martin if he loses the match.
Now – writing for – Paul Merson has shared what he thinks will happen when Wolves take on Southampton in this crucial Premier League clash.
Paul Merson tips Wolves to hammer Southampton
Admirably, the 56-year-old has not sat on the fence by any means with his prediction.

Merson wrote: “Wolves are struggling at the moment, but I don’t think they are as bad as people think. I believe they play good football, it’s just that they also shoot themselves in the foot at times. This is quite simply a must-win game for Wolves. If they fail to get three points, that’s 11 games without a win!
“When the fixtures came out, Wolves would’ve been expecting to win this clash and that has now become an absolute necessity for them. Southampton got a big result last weekend when they beat Everton. I didn’t see that coming if I’m being honest. I doubt they can use that rare win as a springboard to get another result at Molineux on Saturday though. They could struggle to deal with Wolves’ attack and may even get suffocated by the hosts.
“Wolves need just a little bit of luck here and there to get back on track and I’m backing them to get their first win of the season against Southampton. Wolves 3-0 Southampton.”
We agree.
Southampton were quite fortunate to pick up three points against Everton last time out, with Beto seeing a late equaliser disallowed for a very tight offside, while Aaron Ramsdale was also tested a lot – on another day, his wonder save from Michael Keane squirms in.
Contrastingly, Wolves looked quite dangerous in the 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, showing real spirit to fight back from 1-0 down to lead 2-1, with just one sloppy moment seeing Marc Guehi equalise.
Fosun have two names in mind to replace Gary O’Neil
If Wolves do fail to beat Southampton and O’Neil loses his job, Fosun already have two managers in mind to replace the 41-year-old.

TBR Football understand David Moyes and Rob Edwards are on the list, with the latter still holding strong connections at Molineux – having both played and managed at Wolves.
Therefore, O’Neil really needs a win this Saturday, or he could quickly be handed his P45.
