Paul Merson makes bold prediction for Tottenham vs Aston Villa on Sunday

Tottenham Hotspur prepare to host Aston Villa in the Premier League in what promises to be one an exciting game of football.

The hosts are five points behind Unai Emery’s side in the league table and will aim to build on their 2-1 win against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

As for Villa, they were knocked out of the cup by Crystal Palace but won’t lose too much sleep as they are in a healthy position in the Premier League standings.

And Paul Merson has made a bold prediction ahead of the game on Sunday.

Tottenham have fallen behind in their pursuit of a top-four spot in the Premier League and Villa could go eight clear of Sunday’s opponents with a win.

Merson predicts a 2-1 win for the away side, although he feels Tottenham could really take advantage of their high line.

“I thought it was a really bad result for Aston Villa when they lost to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup during midweek,” wrote Merson in his column for .

“I know they play in the Champions League and compete well in the Premier League, but they should also look to win the cup. That exit would have definitely been disappointing for Villa.

“I’m still going to back them to beat Tottenham though. Villa’s high line could face problems against Spurs, but I just can’t see them not scoring in this game.

“It’s going to be a big blow for Tottenham in their attempt to qualify for the Champions League if they lose this game.

“Villa can open up an eight-point gap over Spurs if they win and that may well be curtains for the north Londoners’ hopes about finishing fourth. I just think Villa have a bit more in them than Tottenham and fully expect them to win here.”
