Paul Merson hails £35m Liverpool ace who has been his nation’s ‘best player’ so far this summer
As one of the biggest clubs in Europe, Liverpool have had considerable representation at Euro 2024 and the Copa America this summer.
The Reds had six players in the Euros semi-finals: Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate.
Meanwhile, three Liverpool players reached the Copa America semi-finals, namely Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister.
Therefore, there’s a good chance that at least one Liverpool player will return to the AXA Training Centre with an international winner’s medal in August.

Paul Merson hails Liverpool and Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo
Gakpo has been particularly impressive for the Oranje, having claimed three goals and one assist en route to the final four of the tournament in Germany.
Paul Merson, writing on , has sung the £35million Liverpool man‘s praises, saying he has been the Netherlands’ best player so far at Euro 2024.
However, the Sky Sports pundit also noted how Gakpo struggled against Turkiye, saying he was rendered ineffective when forced onto his left foot.
Looking ahead to England’s semi-final meeting with the Netherlands on Wednesday, he thinks the Three Lions will get the better of Gakpo and co.
“I can’t see anything but an England win, I honestly can’t,” wrote Merson.
“I look at the options the Netherlands have upfront and barring Cody Gakpo, who has been in sublime form at Euro 2024, I don’t think the other options… are good enough.
“If Virgil van Dijk hadn’t played against Turkiye, I dread to think what the score would have been.
“Gakpo has been their best player so far but when Turkiye forced him onto his left foot, he was ineffective and effectively taken out of the game.”
Arne Slot could give Gakpo more game time at Liverpool
Gakpo has been in and out of the Liverpool starting XI since his move to Anfield, but things could well change next season.
His heroics for the Netherlands at Euro 2024 will no doubt be pleasing to new Liverpool boss Arne Slot, both as a fellow Dutchman and as his new manager.
In addition, speculation between Liverpool and Anthony Gordon didn’t lead to a move ahead of 30 June, and Newcastle no longer have a pressing need to sell him.
