Paul Merson claims Everton should ‘ride it out’ with Duncan Ferguson
Paul Merson has claimed that Everton don’t need to rush into appointing their next manager and feels caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson should be given a little bit of time in charge.
After the sacking of Portuguese boss Marco Silva, Toffees legend Ferguson stepped up as interim manager of the Merseyside club.
His first game in charge ended up being a memorable 3-1 victory in the Premier League over Chelsea at Goodison Park.
The 47-year-old is still in temporary charge this weekend for Sunday’s trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in another league fixture.
Pundit Merson believes that Ferguson deserves a bit of time in charge after getting a reaction from his players last weekend.
“Everton are obviously looking for a more high-profile manager long term. But I think you ride it out with Duncan Ferguson before you make any big decisions,”
“Everton are desperate for success. They’re a sleeping giant. And it’s a good job. An attractive job. If they bring someone in now, the new man just has to keep them up. But let’s face it, this Everton team is not going down. There is too much quality in it.
“Everton are not getting relegated so why rush? He’s had a good start, let’s see what he can do over the next few weeks. Then when they have to make a decision they can make sure they get it right.”

TBR’s View:
There is no denying that there was a big response from Everton’s players in the win over Chelsea and they looked much better than a team that went into the game in the bottom three of the league.
But it seems there has been a massive overreaction to Ferguson as a result and at the end of the day it was only one game.
He should maybe start to be taken seriously if he puts a string of wins together, but ultimately the Merseyside club should go out and appoint a proven manager now if one is available to them.
