Paul Merson believes exit-linked Xherdan Shaqiri will leave Liverpool

Paul Merson has suggested that Liverpool attacker Xherdan Shariqi may have played his last game for the club.

The 28-year-old was left out of the Reds match day squad on Thursday night in a match that they were beaten on penalties by Arsenal in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

Shaqiri’s only appearance so far this season came in the cup in a 7-2 win over Lincoln City, which was a game where he scored a stunning free-kick with his favoured left foot.

Despite being a squad player since he joined Liverpool in 2018, he’s been involved in teams that have won both the Premier League and Champions League.

The Switzerland international is currently being linked with a possible exit, as are reporting that two unnamed clubs have made contact about trying to sign him.

It is claimed that Liverpool want to raise £20million from his sale and he was kept out of the cup squad due to the fact he could’ve picked up an injury which could jeopardise a potential move.

After being left out of the squad against Arsenal, Merson predicted that Shaqiri’s time on Merseyside is over and that he could leave before the summer transfer window shuts.

“I would say so,” Merson responded on , when asked if Shaqiri’s Liverpool career is over (10:10pm, 1 October).

“I like Shaqiri I think here will be takers for him. I think he’s a good player, but if your’e not in the squad here you’re nowhere near the first-team I think it could be curtains.”

TBR’s View:

Shaqiri has proven to be a valuable player within the Liverpool squad during the past couple of years and has popped up with some memorable moments, including a brace in a win over Manchester United in December 2018.

He should not be content anymore being on the fringes of a side and it’s such a difficult task trying to break into Liverpool’s frontline, so a move now for him would make sense.

The skilful right-winger has the ability to start for many teams in the Premier League and it will be intriguing to see if the two unnamed clubs will go near his £20million price tag.
