Paul Heckingbottom refutes comparisons between Hibernian struggles and Leeds United
Former Leeds United manager Paul Heckingbottom has refuted comparisons of his current struggle at the Edinburgh club to those he faced toward the end of his spell at Elland Road.
Heckingbottom was brought in to replace Thomas Christiansen in February 2018 after impressing with his coaching ability at Barnsley.
However, he struggled to have any impact at Elland Road. He was sacked that June as Leeds decided to go another direction with the eye-catching appointment of Argentine cult hero Marcelo Bielsa.
Heckingbottom was appointed the new manager of Hibernian in February this year following Neil Lennon’s departure.
This season has been a struggle for Hibs, who currently sit second-bottom of the Scottish Premiership after winning just one league game this term.
Heckingbottom reacted angrily when it was suggested he was losing the fans, in the same manner he did in West Yorkshire.
“It’s pointless making comparisons. Leeds was a long time ago and nothing like this club, nothing at all.
“It was totally different ownership, totally different players and fans and different situation. This is nothing like it at all.”
Heckingbottom makes a fair point about his time at Leeds. For whatever reason, it never clicked at the club and he struggled to win over his owners, as well as the fans.
He appears to have the backing at Easter Road and last night’s win over Kilmarnock booked the club’s place in the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup will have helped ease the pressure.
Hopefully, he can get the chance to turn things around in the Scottish capital and maybe exorcise some of the ghosts from his ill-fated Leeds spell.
