‘Pathetic’… Pundit fuming after what he saw Marcus Rashford do against Man City

Stewart Robson has labelled Marcus Rashford pathetic after the Manchester United forward went down under a challenge from Kyle Walker just before Phil Foden equalised for Manchester City on Sunday.

For some time on Sunday, it appeared that Marcus Rashford may end up being Manchester United’s hero – while also making himself more popular with both Arsenal and Liverpool fans.

Rashford opened the scoring after eight minutes with a screamer. And it took the Cityzens some time before they levelled the game.

Marcus Rashford labelled pathetic after Manchester United defeat

It was an equally special goal from Phil Foden at the start of the second-half. However, the visitors felt aggrieved that they were not awarded a free-kick just outside the champions’ penalty area.

Rashford was running through when he went down as Kyle Walker attempted to regain possession. The referee saw nothing wrong with the incident. And replays showed that there was minimal contact between the two, with Walker seemingly putting an arm out as he caught up with his England teammate.

Erik ten Hag was furious on the touchline. But speaking on , Stewart Robson suggested that his anger should be directed at his forward.

“For me, Rashford scored a great goal, but his general performance was pretty poor. And to go down that easily was pathetic,” he said.

“There might have been a slight touch, and ten Hag was trying to say that people who don’t play the game wouldn’t know that if you’re going so fast, any little nudge, you fall over. He fell over far too easily and he’s got to stay on his feet.

“It’s a great opportunity. He’s in behind Walker, or down the side of Walker, stay on your feet, keep the ball. So yeah, I think it sums up the way Rashford has played in recent weeks.”

Forward had golden opportunity to double visitors’ lead

Rashford will argue that he was pretty much through on goal so had no reason to go down unnecessarily. However, that is the fact that arguably makes the incident all the more frustrating.

Obviously, Kyle Walker can catch up with almost anyone. But Rashford almost appeared to give up on trying to get away from the full-back, and decided that trying to get him sent off may benefit Manchester United more.

It did not work. And Manchester City punished them moments later.
