‘Pathetic’… Ian Wright was really angry with decision over £5m West Ham player yesterday

On what proved to be an excellent afternoon for David Moyes’ West Ham United yesterday, Ian Wright was still fuming with one moment.

West Ham excelled in attack against Gary O’Neil’s Wolverhampton Wanderers and deserved their 3-0 win.

All of Lucas Paqueta, Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen were superb, a front three good enough for the highest level.

And despite it being a positive afternoon on the whole, Ian Wright was still baffled by one moment.

Wright was speaking on the BBC’s and was fuming about the decision to not at least yellow card Vladimir Coufal.

The full-back appeared to leave an elbow on a Wolves player in the first half but faced no action after VAR checked for a possible red – which wouldn’t have seemed too unjust.

Questioning the decision to not even book Coufal, Wright said: “This is pathetic, that’s the only way I can, Gary O’Neil got booked in this game, this guy didn’t even get booked, Coufal, he didn’t even get booked.

“Look at his elbow, look, how is that not even a booking? Come on man.

“It’s ridiculous, it’s ridiculous, that is ridiculous, and it’s pointless saying anything.”

Of course, whilst Wright was focusing on the lack of action here, he could have easily criticised Coufal himself.

The incident seemed so needless with West Ham playing well and in control.

Moreover, Coufal has been having a very strong season, but he certainly got it wrong on this occasion.

And even West Ham fans may agree with Wright that the rules simply don’t make sense in this case.

Despite the possibility of the elbow being a red, the ref can’t award a yellow card retrospectively as per the procedures in place.

As Wright mentioned, Gary O’Neil did receive a yellow card for his own protests, one that West Ham fans may again sympathise with.

All that being said, it does remain a brilliant win and performance for The Hammer, one that Moyes needed in the league.

Moreover, with that front three in place, there’s plenty of reason for optimism over the festive period.
