Packie Bonner and James McFadden urge Celtic to consider Europa League manager

that RB Salzburg manager Jesse Marsch would be an excellent appointment for Celtic, following the resignation of Neil Lennon on Wednesday morning.

Lennon has finally left the club after calls from supporters and pundits to see him depart. He leaves after a loss to Ross County, which allowed Rangers to go 18 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership with just eight league games to play.

Rangers need just seven points to win, and that has finally seen Lennon decide to go. The likes of Eddie Howe, Steve Clarke, Rafa Benitez, Frank Lampard and plenty more are being linked the job – but a new suggestion has been made.

Marsch, 47, has caught the eye with his work at Salzburg. Their model of bringing through young talent and selling them on – most notably Erling Haaland – has impressed, as well as their style of place. McFadden and Bonner want him.

“I want to put up Jesse Marsch as a contender. He’s the man for me. Me and James both know this because we’ve listened to him with the Pro License and UEFA, he actually thinks slightly differently.

“Of course, he has the experience now being with Salzburg. He’s got good English, good communication skills, but he thinks outside the box. That’s what I like. He is in a Brendan Rodgers-mould, that’s where I think the club needs to go.

“I listened to him on Pro License and looked a bit into him, and he was really impressive. He had a playing career in America, but was manager of New York Red Bulls – then worked under Ralf Rangnick at RB Leipzig.

“Now he is Salzburg manager, look at the model they have – Erling Haaland, Naby Keita. They identify these players, knowing they will sell them on. He was really impressive for me, he would have a real impression and do well at Celtic.”

TBR’s view – Why Marsch is absolutely ideal, but Celtic have little chance

They have little chance because Julian Nagelsmann will eventually leave RB Leipzig. The young manager has starred in the role, and is currently being linked with Tottenham Hotspur. Other Premier League clubs will be keeping an eye, too.

So, who will Leipzig get to replace him? Leipzig and Salzburg have that RedBull connection and clearly, Marsch will be at the top of their list when Nagelsmann does eventually depart. But his style of play and transfer acumen makes him ideal for Celtic.

Can Celtic convince him with a move to Parkhead? Salzburg are very much a similar club in that Celtic buy young on the cheap and look to sell. Bonner suggests he as a bit of Rodgers about him, so surely he would be the ideal candidate.
