Oxford could be unlikely West Ham holding midfield solution if he refuses loan exit
Reece Oxford is set for talks over his West Ham future but does not want to be sent out on loan this month,
The Mail that the Hammers are keen to offload the 20-year-old this month but no buyers are named as of yet and Oxford’s reticence to make a temporary move could create an impasse.
Oxford burst onto the scene in 2015 but has failed to live up to his early promise, taking his eye off the ball as Declan Rice has usurped him and turned into everything he was meant to be.
Like Rice, Oxford can play in both central defence and defensive midfield and Manuel Pellegrini appears keen for reinforcements in that holding role in the January window.
Summer signing Carlos Sanchez is a long-term absentee and West Ham being linked with experienced destroyers such as and indicate that Pellegrini wants another seasoned option to provide competition and cover for Rice.
But as those leads have run a little quiet and with Oxford no closer to leaving, Pellegrini should give Oxford an opportunity in the position where he burst into the first team.
Oxford has lost his way but at his best, he can be an energetic, cultured option at the base of midfield and the only way for him to rebuild his fractured relationship with the fans is to help the side on the pitch.
