‘Outstanding’, ‘here to stay’: Some Newcastle fans blown away by £12m man’s ‘masterclass’ today
A number of Newcastle United fans have praised Matt Ritchie on Twitter after his impressive performance in the Magpies’ return to Premier League action on Sunday.
Steve Bruce’s charges took on Sheffield United at St James’ Park as the hosts played their first competitive game in three months.
It proved a perfect day at the office for Newcastle as they ran out 3-0 winners over Chris Wilder’s high-flyers, who had John Egan sent off five minutes into the second half.

Allan Saint-Maximin opened the scoring for the Tyneside outfit on 55 minutes following a calamitous error by Enda Stevens.
Ritchie provided the assist, a low ball into the centre which the Blades defender failed to connect with, allowing Saint-Maximin to fire home at the far post.
The winger then got himself on the scoresheet in the 69th minute with a thunderous effort from the edge of the area.
Joelinton then wrapped up the scoring 12 minutes from time as he netted from close range from Miguel Almiron’s pinpoint ball.
As well as his two goal contributions, Ritchie covered a lot of ground and was by far the loudest player on the pitch, his orders clearly audible.
Plenty of Newcastle fans were impressed with the Scotland international’s display and raved about him on social media.
Here is some of the reaction:
WHAT A RUN, WHAT A FINISH ? boyband Matt Ritchie is here to stay

Not bad Matt Ritchie! Playing as if it’s a training game seems to be doing the trick for us ?

Bruce ball was fantastic pace, power and intensity. Ritchie showed his quality second half.

, Ritchie and outstanding today. Joelinton deserves massive credit too. Solely responsible for Egan’s red card and chuffed to see him get a goal after his first half miss. Well done to Bruce for getting us where we are, expectations exceeded.

Ritchie did have a great game. I don’t know why so many people dislike him. Joelinton wasn’t as good as ASM/Almiron and didn’t deserve an 8 for the tap in and getting someone sent off.

Ritchie. Goal and assist, great performance.

All this Ritchie slander and the he pulls off a masterclass today.
He wears a magic hat ?

Ritchie was powerful, Hayden was brilliant, ASM made Sheffield Utd’s defenders look amateur, Joelinton redeemed himself. I’d go Ritchie but literally not by much.
