‘Outstanding’, ‘Brilliant’: Some fans react as £11m Tottenham man impresses for their country

Tottenham’s Joe Rodon played in the 1-1 Wales draw against Switzerland on Saturday – and some Welsh fans on Twitter praised the defender for his individual performance.

Wales came from behind to draw with Switzerland in their first group stage match of Euro 2020. Therefore, Group A remains wide open.

Breel Embolo deservedly gave the Swiss a lead early in the second half by converting a header from a corner. However, Kieffer Moore’s 74th minute equaliser with another header ensured each country earned a point.

Up next, Wales face Turkey on Wednesday in their next match. Meanwhile, Switzerland play Italy.

It wasn’t a faultless performance. But, Rodon did enough to impress fans during his first appearance at a senior international tournament.

The Spurs centre-back is an important player at national level.

Unfortunately, the 23-year-old is still trying to force his way into the best Spurs XI after just one year at the north London club.

Rodon, along with the entire Welsh defence, were up against it for large spells of the 90 minutes against a Switzerland side that posed a physical threat.

It’s slightly surprising the Spurs man is getting such praise on social media. For instance, he received just a 6/10 rating by national media for his display.

Regardless, he’s now got the first game of Euro 2020 out of the way to release the nerves.

He’s a highly-rated centre-half that has to be planning to get into the Spurs XI on a permanent basis next season, and a strong tournament with his country should help.

In conclusion, the Spurs defender is someone who could have a huge summer ahead of him.
