Osaze Urhoghide open to new Sheffield Wednesday contract despite Leeds United interest

According to , Sheffield Wednesday defender Osaze Urhoghide is open to signing a new contract with the League One-bound side despite transfer interest from Leeds United.

The Whites are one of a host of clubs monitoring Urhoghide’s situation at Hillsborough, with the 20-year-old a potential free agent with his current deal set to expire at the end of the next month.

Sheffield Wednesday have presented the centre-half with new terms after he established himself as a first-team player this season, making across all competitions to build on his breakthrough from last term.

Urhoghide has also built a strong relationship with Darren Moore after he arrived to replace Tony Pulis, which could aid Sheffield Wednesday’s position with the defender said to be open to signing new terms despite the Owls’ relegation form the Championship.

But the former AFC Wimbledon talent will not rush a decision over his future, as Urhoghide is keen to explore all available options with Leeds and Crystal Palace presenting a move to the Premier League, along with interest from Club Brugge and Sporting Lisbon.

Staying at Sheffield Wednesday is expected to see Urhoghide establish a more prominent first-team role next season with the Owls bound for League One, but he fears being stuck at a club beset in the third-tier after the lengthy struggles of others to secure promotion.

TBR’s view:

Leeds still appear to be in the race for Urhoghide’s signature despite the blow of the defender being open to penning a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday, so may have to be patient and wait like the Owls until he has decided where his future lies.

The Whites should certainly keep an eye on the 6 ft 2 enforcer’s situation, as he would offer Marcelo Bielsa or U23s boss Mark Jackson a versatile option with Garry Monk his ‘adaptability’ while in charge at Hillsborough as Urhoghide can play at centre and right-back.

Moore has also waxed lyrical over Urhoghide since taking up the long-vacant Owls head coach position, the youngster ‘immense’ and ‘absolutely rock solid’ for his ability to spoil the opposition’s attacks and get in the right areas to meet the ball.
