Opinion: Former West Ham star may have hinted he wants to return, they’d be silly to ignore him

Man United star Jesse Lingard whipped West Ham fans up into a frenzy once again last night. A picture was posted of his young daughter outside the London Stadium on her account with the caption “A bit of London sightseeing”.

While many will point to the fact that this is his daughter’s account and not his, she is clearly too young to run her own account.

If this is the ‘come and get me’ plea that some Hammers fans think it is, the West Ham hierarchy must not waste time.

Is a move likely for Lingard?

Jesse Lingard looks very likely to leave Manchester United at the end of the season.

David Ornstein that West Ham and Newcastle tried to sign him on deadline day in January but both teams were put off by the high prices quoted by the Red Devils.

Lingard’s contract, however, expires at the end of 2023 in what is sure to spark a war for the Mancunian’s services.

On a free transfer, with a wealth of experience and not to mention his valuable homegrown status, Lingard is a commodity that will be valuable to many in the Premier League.

West Ham owners Sulivan and Gold would be stupid not to move for a player with such a clear affinity for the club.

Do West Ham need him?

Yes. Goals have dried up a bit at West Ham since Christmas as both Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio have felt the strain of staying fit while fighting on 4 fronts.

Jesse Lingard would lessen the load on West Ham’s star men. His 10 goals in the run-in last season fired West Ham to their jet-setting European adventure this year. Big goals against Arsenal and Spurs saw Jesse Lingard’s stock rise as he proved himself as a clutch player.

Help is required if the Hammers want to remodel themselves as a continental team and Lingard would add competition without needing time to bed in.

He knows the culture around West Ham. He’s good friends with the leaders (multiple Instagram videos with Declan Rice and captain Mark Noble attest to this) and is loved by the manager who has expressed frustration at his situation at United.

Moyes told “I think he’s such a talented football player and he’s not playing”

He would be a quick, efficient and cheap solution to a problem that has plagued West Ham in recent matches. He should be top of West Ham’s list for the summer.
