One year on from link to Andre Gomes, should Tottenham regret failed pursuit?
Tottenham have struggled for consistency during the 2019/20 campaign and Jose Mourinho has plenty of work to do.
The recent unprecedented break has arrived shortly after Tottenham were thrashed by Red Bull Leipzig in the Champions League.
Mourinho’s team are seven points adrift of Chelsea in fourth in the race for a return to Europe’s elite club competition next season too.
With that in mind, some new additions will need to be identified by the club during the summer.
Tottenham’s summer recruitment hasn’t really paid dividends. At a time when the club has endured rotten luck with injuries, certain players haven’t stepped up.
Tanguy Ndombele is one of them with the signing flattering to deceive.
Things could have been different, however, as this weekend marks a year since reported Spurs interest in Everton midfielder Andre Gomes.
At the time, the 26-year-old was on loan at Goodison Park from Barcelona and Tottenham wanted to hijack a £22 million permanent deal.
Of course, the Portuguese performer did eventually seal a move to Everton, leaving Tottenham to ponder what might have been.
Gomes showed tremendous courage this season. He suffered a fracture-dislocation of his right leg in November but prior to the recent hiatus, was back playing again.
Meanwhile, Ndombele has struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League. Mourinho said after Tottenham’s last Premier League game that he had expected more from the Frenchman by now.
Regret
Gomes might be older than Ndombele but in 18 months at Everton, he has shown real quality.
He is hardworking, good on the ball and also strong in the tackle and it’s fair to say, right now, he’d have offered more than the Tottenham man has.
Spurs’ loss is Everton’s gain and Gomes can be a big player for the Toffees in the future as he reaches his peak.
Although Carlo Ancelotti’s team are below Tottenham in the league, the lack of a midfield general at Spurs could have made Gomes a serious asset in North London.
