One winner and loser as Fulham sign Alfie Mawson from Swansea

Newly promoted Premier League side Fulham are continuing their terrific summer transfer window having completed the signing of the highly rated Swansea centre-back Alfie Mawson, in a fee thought to be in the region of .

Mawson suffered relegation heartache last season, failing to keep Swansea in the top flight of English football, however, the 24-year-old defender gained a lot of plaudits throughout the campaign for his performances.

Fulham made Mawson their fifth signing of the summer yesterday and look set to cause a storm in the Premier League next season.

Here, at The Boot Room, we take a look at one winner and loser from Alfie Mawson’s switch from Swansea to Fulham.

Winner – Fulham’s defence

Mawson demonstrated during the 2017/18 Premier League season what he’s capable of doing from the heart of the defence and will be a vital cog in Fulham’s side for this campaign.

It’ll be interesting to see how Mawson links up with fellow new boy Jean Seri playing just in front of him in defensive midfield and the duo certainly have the potential to be a real nuisance to Premier League forwards this season.

Slavisa Jokanovic is building a very credible team right now, and Mawson will in no doubt be the focal point of Fulham’s defence for seasons to come.

Loser – Burnley

The stated earlier in the transfer window that Sean Dyche’s Burnley side were keen on bringing Mawson to Turf Moor. However, they have now lost the battle for his signature to Premier League new boys Fulham.

The failed pursuit of the Swansea defender will come as a real blow for Burnley, especially after they secured European football last season for the first time in the clubs history.

Dyche’s side were in dire need of a big money signing, and it always seemed like Mawson would be the man to fill this void. He will be kicking himself that he couldn’t get this one over the line.
