One winner and loser as Patrick Bamford looks set for Leeds United switch
It has been a frustrating summer for Leeds United with new signings not overly forthcoming ahead of their first Championship fixture against Stoke City next Sunday.
The lack of incoming activity at Elland Road thus far means that recently appointed boss Marcelo Bielsa is expected to be extremely busy between now and the closure of the window in just under two weeks.
Barry Douglas became the club’s latest recruit when he penned terms at the Whites on Saturday and his arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers is expected to ignite a spending spree by the West Yorkshire-based club.
Leeds will be bolstered this week with the arrival of Middlesbrough striker Patrick Bamford who is set for a medical ahead of completing a £7 million switch to join up with Bielsa’s squad.
The 24-year-old netted 13 goals last season despite finding himself on the fringes of the first-team for a large period of the campaign and his arrival at Leeds will end their desperate search for a new striker.
It will certainly be interesting to see if Bamford can score the required amount of goals to fire Leeds into the Premier League and here at TBR Football we looked at one winner and one loser in this particular transfer…
Winner – Britt Assombalonga
Earlier in the summer it had been reported in various media outlets that Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga had been part of a training ground bust-up with boss Tony Pulis, with doubts then raised over whether he might be sold during the current transfer window.
The news that Patrick Bamford is now leaving the club, however, goes a long way towards suggesting that the 25-year-old will begin the season as Pulis’ first-choice striker.
Assombalonga has a lot to live up to having signed from Forest for a fee in the region of £15 million and it now looks as though he will get ample opportunities next season to maintain a place in Pulis’ plans.
Loser – Matej Vydra
Leeds had been all set to complete an £11 million deal for Derby County striker Matej Vydra, but an expected wage request from the Czech striker has now seemingly scuppered his hopes of joining the Whites,
With Derby having spent heavily on Jack Marriott this summer, it had been expected that they would need to sell their star man but this now leaves the East Midlands-based side, and Vydra, with some serious decisions to make.
The 26-year-old will be desperate to hit the goal trail once again during 2018/19 but this development now casts serious doubts over where exactly he will play his football next season.
