One to Watch: Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard can step up following Moussa Dembele’s departure
Moussa Dembele’s departure represents the perfect opportunity for Odsonne Edouard to prove his worth.
Edouard became the most expensive signing in Scottish football history this summer, when Celtic spent on acquiring his services from Paris Saint-Germain.
The Frenchman looked good in his 1,259 minutes of senior football last season, in which he scored 11 goals. However, he was quite clearly second fiddle to Dembele.
Now, he is the main man.
After Celtic’s disastrous start to the season, the club will lean on the 20-year-old to be a steady stream of goals as they strive for an historic treble of domestic trebles.
Edouard is a versatile attacker, but one would suspect he will now be tasked with leading the line for the Scottish champions.
The striker suffered a knee injury earlier in the season but recovered to start for Celtic in last week’s Old Firm derby with Rangers.
He was picked ahead of Leigh Griffiths, who came off the bench to replace Edouard midway through the second half.
And he has started the season promisingly too, with four goals in 547 minutes of competitive football.
Above all this, Edouard is a similar type of striker to Dembele and therefore Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers will not have to adjust his style greatly to accommodate for playing the Frenchman up front.
His link up play is excellent and he can fashion his own chances utilising his dribbling qualities.
He is generally a good finisher and will have plenty of opportunities to hone that skill playing up front for Celtic this season.
Dembele’s departure reduces the quantity of strikers at Celtic’s disposal, but it does not reduce the quality of the striker that will start for them on a weekly basis.
Edouard is ready to play his role.
