One to watch: Everton’s 20-year-old midfielder Tom Davies

Everton were active over the summer, but positions in midfield still seem extremely open for their academy graduate Tom Davies to continue to develop.

Heading into his third season as a first-team regular now, the 20-year-old has impressed in his ability to play multiple roles in midfield and fill gaps under previous managers.

Play Style

Under Marco Silva, Davies is presented the opportunity to make use of his ball-carrying skills through midfield.

In fact, he is always running. He gets stuck in. He almost always finishes games with muddy knees, muddy shorts and a muddy shirt.

Because of this, the English midfielder has the potential to play an important role as a key component of Everton’s defensive and offensive transition phases.

Sam Allardyce sees Davies’ future in attacking midfield.

“I see that [goals and creativity] as the mainstay of his ability. That is his strength. As a young player, there are times he could pick out a pass a little better, and times when he does not need to go forward quite as much,” Allardyce told the club website.

“But he has really good attacking ability and makes some intelligent runs. At the end of that we are looking for assists or goals – or both.

“I feel that is his strength, in attacking midfield. Hopefully, he will continue to improve his performances and get some assists and goals at the end of it.”

Season Ahead

Silva’s attacking style should suit Davies pushing forward and taking advantage of the skills Allardyce believes are his best.

He will be hoping to add more goals to his game, but improving his defensive reliability – as far as positioning is concerned – will be a key area Davies will look to improve upon this season.
