One to watch: Wolves’ 19-year-old full-back Ruben Vinagre
Ruben Vinagre’s move to Wolves has been one of the moves that flew under the radar this summer.
On one hand, it is understandable. He was already at the club last season and the acquisition was the activation of an option to buy clause.
Furthermore, he only played 967 minutes of senior football last season.
He has the potential to be a more integral figure this time around. However, he now faces a battle with Wolves’ loan acquisition Jonny for minutes at left wing-back.
Vinagre will take confidence from his role in Portugal’s Under-19 European Championship triumph this summer.
Play Style
Still just 19, the Portuguese wing-back is an extremely confident player that trusts in his ability to stand his marker up and beat him with skill and speed.
He attempts almost two dribbles a game from his defensive-minded position.
Defensively though, Vinagre remains quite solid, with his speed underpinning his ability to both press the opposition into their own half or track back in transition.
In one-on-one situations, he remains slightly undersized, but he will hopefully continue to become physically stronger as he continues to age.
Season Ahead
Vinagre is still adapting to life in England and has spoken about the positive impact of the Portuguese community that has been fostered at Wolves over the last 12 months, in an interview translated by Sport Witness.
“I’m the youngest and I feel like I’m their brother, because they’re always joking with me,” he told A Bola, as cited by .
“Their presence facilitated my adaptation greatly. I was super well received by everyone.”
“We are often together out of training and that’s cool, especially because I live alone. From time to time I have my parents, my girlfriend and my friends who are very important to me.”
As he continues to adapt to his surroundings, he will only continue to improve.
