One struggling Manchester United star will be ‘like a new signing’ according to Rio Ferdinand
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes one of Erik Ten Hag’s struggling signings will be “like a new signing” in the new season after a full pre-season under Ruben Amorim.
Few Manchester United players escaped the 2024/25 Premier League season with any credit in the bank as the club slumped to a 15th-place finish.
However, having struggled in his first half season in charge of the club, there is renewed optimism at Old Trafford that Ruben Amorim can help guide the club back into contention.
Amorim’s squad, bolstered by the arrival of Bryan Mbuemo, prepared for the new season by claiming the Premier League Summer Series, as they look to leave last year’s struggles behind them.
Mason Mount has featured regularly in Man United’s pre-season programme, scoring from the bench in the final Summer Series game against Everton. Now, Rio Ferdinand has backed him to shine next season with a full pre-season under his belt.

Rio Ferdinand backs Manchester United star to shine
Speaking on Talksport, Ferdinand admitted that Mount’s injury struggles had hampered Mount in the two years since his move from Chelsea.
However, the former United hero backed Mount to recapture the form which saw him play an instrumental role in Chelsea’s Champions League triumph in 2021.
Ferdinand said: “I saw him out in Chicago and that’s one of the things I said to him – like, how are you feeling? Because he’d been robbed of any minutes really, through injury, and it’s been really, really disappointing to see.
“Take you back to when you played – being injured and in the shadows. I never had that at a new club, but when I was at a club – that is so depressing. It can take your soul away at times, and I’m sure he’s been in some dark moments.
“But yeah, he will be like a new signing, I think. Listen, he’s no surprise. Whenever he’s been fit in his career, he’s played – Chelsea especially – and the managers have played him. When they won the Champions League, one of the most important players.
“He has the quality, he has the work ethic, he has the legs, he has the ability to be a really, really good top player.”

Mason Mount has a point to prove under Ruben Amorim
Mount was one of the most important players in the Chelsea squad before his move to Manchester United, as he also featured regularly for England.
However, after Erik Ten Hag brought him to Old Trafford in 2023, Mount has struggled to recapture his best form, having endured a difficult run with injuries.
Mount played 26 times in all competitions for the Red Devils, scoring three times, with his most significant contribution coming in their run to the Europa League final.
Mason Mount Yearly Stats | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
2024/25 | 26 | 3 | 0 |
2023/24 | 20 | 1 | 1 |
2022/23 | 35 | 3 | 6 |
2021/22 | 53 | 13 | 16 |
2020/21 | 54 | 9 | 9 |
This was an increase on his 20 appearances in his first season with the club, as he managed to score one goal and one assist. By contrast, Mount featured 35 times in his final year at Stamford Bridge, scoring three times and registering six assists.
At 26 years of age, Mount still has plenty of football left in him. If Amorim can unlock his best form, he could still win over the United faithful this season.
