Everton target Denzel Dumfries was lauded by his national media after the PSV Eindhoven defender played a starring role as the Netherlands beat Austria at Euro 2020.

Holland in the knockout stages of the tournament with a 2-0 win on Thursday night. Frank de Boer’s side beat Ukraine in their opening fixture before strolling past Austria in a classy display.

Memphis Depay converted from the spot to break the deadlock in the 11th-minute after David Alaba brought Dumfries down inside the box. The PSV gem nipped the ball away from Alaba, who stamped on the marauding right-back’s foot to see a penalty given.

Dumfries continued to give Alaba issues and forced the defender into another mistake with a long-throw, but Depay could only ripple the side netting. Yet the Dutch duo again led the charge in the second half for Dumfries to double the advantage.

Depay swivelled around the Austria backline to find substitute Donyell Malen, who coolly rolled the ball to Dumfries. And the  right-back made no mistake to tap home his second goal of Euro 2020 in as many games.

His adventurous display that saw Dumfries feature more as a right-winger than full-back came after Everton were credited with interest. Per , Marcel Brands is willing to pay €15million (£13m) for PSV’s captain.

The Toffees target is proving Brands could be spending wisely by bringing Dumfries to Everton. And his latest showcase saw the 25-year-old lauded by .

“Are we looking at one of the sensations of the tournament?” they wrote. “Dumfries won the penalty and then netted the second goal. A constant threat down the right and he has now played a role in all five Oranje goals this tournament.”

TBR’s view: Everton target Dumfries is a Euro 2020 star

Everton are on the hunt for Seamus Coleman’s long-term successor this summer, which Euro 2020 star Dumfries may just be. The Dutchman is proving to be one of the sensations of the tournament, like Football-Oranje claim, as a key man for De Boer.

He fell just shy of the publication’s Man of the Match on Thursday with Frenkie De Jong taking that honour. Dumfries would have been the star of the show in successive games had he, after .

Dumfries is dominating at Euro 2020 from the right-hand side of De Boer’s backline with marauding runs up the touchline. That is also a trait Everton like from their full-backs, which could make a €13m swoop a real bargain.
