‘One of the possibilities’: Romano says Arsenal can sign ‘unbelievable’ player for £47.5m this summer

Leeds United have set their asking price for Brazil international Raphinha at £47.5 million amid interest in his services.

That is what journalist Fabrizio Romano is reporting for , offering the latest on the situation.

Barcelona have long been linked with Raphinha, but their financial troubles are well-known and they could now go for former Manchester United winger Angel di Maria instead.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have also been linked and their interest would be even more plausible if they could offload Nicolas Pepe first.

Raphinha asking price set at £47.5 million

Romano said: “For Raphinha, negotiations between Barcelona and his agents have advanced since February but the €25 million (£21.6 million) clause will not be activated because Leeds are staying in the Premier League.

“Leeds are now asking for €55 million (£47.5 million) guaranteed and not paid in many instalments, which is why the deal has slowed down.

“Arsenal have been keeping tabs on Raphinha since March – he is one of the possibilities on the list but not the only one. The club is also focused on trying to find an agreement with Bukayo Saka to extend his contract.

“Personally, I think Raphinha is great to watch and he could be a great fit for Xavi’s project, but if things continue to stall there, it might be worth watching to see if he stays in the Premier League.”

Raphinha seemed to have his heart set on the Nou Camp, and in ordinary circumstances, Barcelona would have the finances to take him to La Liga.

But they do not seem to have those to hand right now, and free agent di Maria would be more in keeping with their recent transfer strategy.

That could open the door for Arsenal, and what an upgrade on Pepe Raphinha would be, if they could find a taker for the Ivorian at a decent price.
