‘One of the best’ dribblers in the Premier League is reportedly close to joining Everton

Everton want to re-sign Ross Barkley and are closing in on a deal to bring him back to Goodison Park.

say the Toffees are in advanced talks with the Chelsea midfielder and there are only small details remaining to sort out.

Barkley was a hugely exciting player for club and country when he burst onto the scene, and went to World Cup 2014 and Euro 2016.

Since moving to Stamford Bridge, his career has stalled, but there have still been the odd signs of the quality he has.

Everton boss Frank Lampard of course managed Barkley during his time at Chelsea, and picked him for an FA Cup fifth round tie against Liverpool in early March 2020.

Barkley scored to cap off an excellent performance in the 2-0 win, and earned huge praise from pundit Glen Johnson watching on.

Johnson said: “He is one of the best players in the league for me, when he’s doing this [running at opposition players].

“Sometimes it looks like he doesn’t know what to do. You like to see him go on a run like that more often and just let the shots go.”

Everton want Ross Barkley

Barkley just has not shone that quality often enough during his career and we are still talking about potential rather than proven ability with him.

He is now 28, when he should be entering the prime of his career, but instead he is trying to reignite it and is miles away from the England World Cup squad for this winter.

Of course, there are other considerations with Everton and Barkley, given the nature of his departure when he joined Chelsea.

That could be a tough situation for Lampard to manage, but he has seen Barkley’s quality up close and knows what he can do.
