Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo over the last few days.

revealed earlier this month that the Gunners, along with Liverpool, have accelerated their interest in the 22-year-old winger, who has been absolutely incredible in Holland this season.

Gakpo has scored 16 goals and has provided 15 assists in all competitions, which is an incredible return for a winger.

Voetbal International revealed a few days ago that PSV’s asking price for their star attacker stands at £33 million, the same fee that Napoli paid for Hirving Lozano. But, club legend Rene van der Kerkhof believes Gakpo’s actually worth a lot more.

Rene van der Kerkhof: Arsenal-linked Cody Gakpo is worth £50m

Van der Kerkhof, a winger himself who played over 275 times for his beloved PSV, told : “I think he is one of the best players that PSV has produced in recent years.

“He has the appearance of a top player, that is very important. I jokingly call him King Gakpo.

“He has a lot of footballing qualities. I actually don’t know in which position he comes into his own best. He can play well on the left and right, but I would put him in the (number) ten position. You just have to let him play football the way he can. That would be my idea.”

Asked about what he’s worth in today’s market, the PSV icon said: “That’s very simple: £50 million. He is definitely worth it. I think Gakpo can certainly succeed in England, but I would also find Bayern a very good club for him. He thinks so too, I think.”

The Gunners’ priority in the summer will be a new striker and a central midfielder. Those two positions have to be addressed as early as possible and once that’s done, Arsenal can look at a winger like Gakpo.

The 22-year-old’s direct goal contributions this season have been absolutely incredible.

The Dutch top-flight is definitely not on the same level as the Premier League, but 16 goals and 15 assists in any league for a player of his age is a very impressive return.

Gakpo would fit in really well with all the young players at Arsenal but with Liverpool also reportedly in the race to sign him, it will not be easy for Mikel Arteta’s side to get a deal done this summer.
