‘One of, if not the, best’: £12k-a-week Rangers ace earns big praise from international teammate
Glasgow Rangers ace Steven Davis has been praised by Northern Ireland teammate and former Ibrox man Kyle Lafferty, in conversation with the .
The Rangers midfielder is set to win his 119th cap for his country on Monday, which would see him equal Pat Jennings’ tally, when Ian Baraclough’s charges take on Norway in the UEFA Nations League.
With Northern Ireland facing Bosnia & Herzegovina in a Euro 2020 playoff final next month, followed by a Nations League meeting with Austria, Davis is in line to become his nation’s all-time record cap holder before the year is over.
It would be a great achievement for a player who has already achieved so much during his career, including three SPL titles, two Scottish Cups, three Scottish League Cups, a UEFA Cup runners-up medal and his nation’s captaincy at a major tournament.
“There are no words to describe Davo on and off the park,” Lafferty told the . “He is one of a kind and will go down as one of Northern Ireland’s greatest players along with George Best.
“What Davo has done for Northern Irish football is remarkable. The record speaks for itself. He is one of, if not the, best I have ever shared a pitch with and he is a gentleman off the field as well.
“He makes the game so easy. He reads it well, he can take the sting out of the game or he can raise the tempo if we are needing that to chase a goal. He has come face to face with some of the best players in the world and he has come out on top.”

There’s not really much that can be added to what Lafferty has said – Davis has been nothing short of remarkable for Northern Ireland, and Rangers have lucky to have him in their ranks again.
Davis took a huge paycut from his previous deal at Southampton – from £60,000-a-week to £12,000-a-week – to rejoin the Gers, testament to a player who truly loves the club.
As things stand, Davis’ contract runs until 2021, and with him turning 36 next year, it remains to be seen what his future holds at Ibrox.
That said, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him play for a few more years, much like Jermain Defoe – and hopefully he’ll be able to help Rangers to more silverware.
