On this day: Leeds United appoint Paul Heckingbottom as manager

It probably feels like a lot longer to Leeds United fans, but the club appointed Paul Heckingbottom as their new manager a year ago today.

The new manager was brought in to replace Thomas Christiansen, who had been sacked after a poor run of form.

It was a move which certainly came as a shock to Barnsley fans, considering he had only signed a new deal at Oakwell a few days earlier. The Tykes board were certainly taken aback, with a club statement stating they were ‘shocked’ at his decision,

However, he never got Leeds back into anything like good form. He managed to win just four games from 16 in charge and Leeds decided in the summer they would go another direction.

That they did, appointing the legendary Marcelo Bielsa who has helped guide the club to a promotion fight.

Heckingbottom, meanwhile, remains out of work, he is in contention for the Hibernian vacancy in Scotland’s capital.

But what a difference a year makes. Leeds were tumbling, with some mediocre performances and no real direction just 12 months ago.

Now, despite their recent dip in form, things look a lot brighter at Elland Road.
