Ollie Watkins makes claim about what Tottenham bench did after John McGinn challenge yesterday

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has now been speaking about John McGinn’s red card against Tottenham Hotspur yesterday.

Ange Postecoglou’s side stole the three points from Villa Park in pretty emphatic fashion on Sunday, proving their credentials for a top four spot.

And although many will point to McGinn’s red card as the turning point, Spurs were already well on their way to winning.

Unai Emery’s side failed to hurt Tottenham on the break early on when their best chances came, and from there the away team dominated possession and took control of the game.

That all being said, Ollie Watkins has now made a claim about what the Tottenham bench did to help  John McGinn receive a red card for his controversial challenge.

Watkins was speaking in an interview with after the game and was clearly very frustrated not only to lose his captain during the match, but also for the next three league games as well.

Watkins thought the Spurs bench reacted very strongly close by to the tackle, which he suggested made the referee’s decision a bit easier.

Speaking in the interview, Watkins still thought Villa were in a strong position to finish ahead of Spurs.

He said: “The sending off I think is harsh. Obviously it looks a little bit reckless because it’s in front of their bench and a big reaction from their side. It’s obviously a tough one to take.

“If someone says you lose the game but you finish with 10 men then I’d take that. John McGinn is so important for us. That’s the biggest nail in the coffin, losing him for three games.

“I believe in us, [Champions League qualification] is in our hands.”

Of course, you’d imagine almost every Tottenham fan would disagree with Watkins wholeheartedly here, McGinn did look to deserve his red card.

Destiny Udogie took a huge, unnecessary blow, one look to be born out of pure frustration.

And it’s clear that it’s now advantage to Spurs and Ange Postecoglou after that excellent away display at Villa.

All that being said, Conor Coady was left blown away by one Tottenham player in the second half yesterday.
