Olivier Bernard shares what Newcastle showed against Arsenal in League Cup semi-final that’s ‘the best’ in England
Newcastle United are through to their second League Cup final in three years after making light work of Arsenal in their semi-final second leg.
After Alexander Isak saw an early goal ruled out for offside, the Sweden international then fired an effort off the post for Jacob Murphy to slot home in the 19th minute.
Newcastle then went 2-0 up early in the second half after David Raya’s poor back-pass to Declan Rice was pounced upon by Fabian Schar and slotted home by Anthony Gordon.
The Magpies ended up winning the tie 4-0 on aggregate, booking them a spot in the final at Wembley, where they’ll face either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur.
Newcastle cult hero Olivier Bernard has now given his verdict on the current Magpies team, their chances of winning the final, and also had some kind words for the Toon Army.

Olivier Bernard says Newcastle fans are ‘the best’ as he predicts Magpies cup triumph
Bernard, speaking on BBC Sport, began by praising Newcastle’s fanbase, calling them “the best” and saying they really made themselves heard on Thursday night.
The Frenchman also backed the Magpies to have the neutrals’ support in the final and tipped Eddie Howe’s side to triumph in the Wembley showpiece.
“Newcastle has the best supporters, the best crowd. They showed it last night,” Bernard said on .
“I think everybody wants to see Newcastle in this final at Wembley and everybody wants to see Newcastle winning a trophy.
“It’s been a long wait. I believe that the lads are ready to do well and to win it.
“70 percent of the players were on the pitch [in their 2023 League Cup final loss to Manchester United], they will remember what happened.
“They missed [a chance] that day, because I don’t think Manchester United were the better side.
“The players can be disappointed with the final but there’s another one coming up and I’m sure they will make it right with this one.
“I’m very confident, this year, it might happen.”
How the Toon Army answered Eddie Howe’s call
Prior to the match, Howe called upon the Newcastle home crowd to make themselves heard on the night and make it as tough as possible for Arsenal.
“I think (our success) has been a combination of us and the crowd,” Howe told reporters.
“I think we’ve become a really potent team together and I think that is what we are going to need in this game.
“We are going to need to engage all our supporters in our energy, body language and every power we possess to involve them in the game because we need to make this a formidable environment for our opponent.
“We need to create positive energy between us and it is our duty to do that.”
The Toon Army did just that, and they certainly played their part as the 12th man as Newcastle got past Arsenal to reach the final.
