Darren bent left talkSPORT presenter Andy Goldstein shocked after he claimed that ex-Tottenham Hotspur star Rafael van der Vaart was a better player than Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes is today.

The Portugal international has been at Old Trafford for a little over two years now. He has been a fine player for the Red Devils more often than not, but his performances this season have given rise to some criticism.

However, Manchester United trust him completely and have offered him a new contract. today that it’s only a matter of time before he puts pen to paper and that’s excellent news for the club.

Bent, however, does not believe Fernandes is up there with the top attacking midfielders in the country.

Darren Bent: Rafael van der Vaart was better than Bruno Fernandes

Speaking about Fernandes on , host Goldstein claimed that Bent, who’s an Arsenal supporter, would take Fernandes in a heartbeat at the Emirates. He disagreed immediately by claiming that he’d rather have Martin Odegaard.

Goldstein then challenged Bent to name another midfielder who has come to the Premier League and hit the ground running better than Fernandes did when he joined Manchester United in January 2020.

Bent replied: “Van der Vaart at Spurs – he was better than Bruno.

A shocked Goldstein responded by saying: “Oh, shut up! He was not better than Bruno Fernandes. What are you talking about? He was a great player but he was nowhere Bruno. The impact he had, the goals and assists in his first season…”

Much to Goldstein’s anger, Bent stuck to his guns and claimed: “I’m going Van der Vaart. I’m saying he was better.”

Van der Vaart only spent a couple of years at Tottenham after he joined them from Real Madrid in 2010, but he quickly became a fan favourite at White Hart Lane.

The Dutchman played 77 times for Spurs in all competitions, scored 28 goals and provided 18 assists. That’s a fantastic return for an attacking midfielder and it just shows you why Bent is adamant that he was better than Fernandes.

However, the Portugal international really did take the Premier League by storm when he arrived and he’s one of the biggest reasons why Manchester United have been in the Champions League in each of their last two seasons.

Fernandes is now set to sign a new five-year deal and he could become an even bigger star in the coming years.
