Off-field actions key to Pablo Hernandez remaining at Leeds United this summer
According to , Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta are more than happy to keep rarely-seen midfielder Pablo Hernandez at Leeds United for another year.
Hernandez has been restricted in his game time during the Whites’ maiden season back in the Premier League, with just in 15 appearances.
The 36-year-old last opened a top-flight fixture at home to Leicester City in November and has only played 15 minutes over Leeds’ last 11 matches in brief cameos.
Hernandez’s lack of game time has raised the potential for the former Valencia maestro to look for a move away in the summer window, despite having one year remaining on the penned in 2019.
Bielsa and Whites Director of Football Orta are not thought to be urging Hernandez to accept a move away from West Yorkshire, and instead would be more than happy for the Leeds fan favourite to play out his contract.
The Whites chiefs value Hernandez’s off-field actions as highly as those on it, with the international a decidedly influential figure behind the scenes and in the dressing room.
Hernandez was instrumental to United gaining promotion from the Championship last term with , having started 27 of his 36 appearances while occasionally donning the captain’s armband.
TBR’s view:
It is clear that Bielsa does not feel Hernandez is able to cope with the demands of the Premier League, given how little the veteran playmaker has featured this season, but his influence off the field is certainly a factor worth Leeds bearing in mind.
Hernandez is a great figure for young players to learn from, while even experienced pros can bend the Spaniard’s earn for advice on the training pitches when conjuring plans to pull off results against established top sides.
A fully-fit Hernandez can also offer Bielsa a game-changing impact, even from the bench, as seen from his brace of assists at home to Newcastle United in December – his of the season – when he set up two goals in eight minutes.
