Nuno Gomes says he would ‘love’ David Luiz to leave Arsenal for Benfica
Former Portugal striker and Benfica club legend, Nuno Gomes, has said he would ‘love’ to see Arsenal defender David Luiz return to the club.
Gomes played alongside Luiz at Benfica earlier in the Brazilian’s career. It’s been a successful career too, taking him to Chelsea, PSG, and Arsenal, all with success and trophies involved.

However, now well into his 30s and playing more of a leadership role with the Gunners, Luiz could well consider his next move. And speaking to , Gomes admitted it would be nice to see Luiz back at Benfica.
“Let’s see what happens. I remember that when he left Benfica he was very well adapted to Portugal in terms of his career on the pitch and his social life off the pitch. He was like a Portuguese already in terms of his way of life and culture,” Gomes .
“He struggled a little bit to leave because he was doing very well and was very well settled here. But the offer that he received he couldn’t refuse. But he always said that one day he wanted to return. I don’t know if it will be possible or not, but I would love it to happen.”
Luiz’s £100k-a-week contract with Arsenal is set to end this summer. The club have yet to come to terms on a new deal with the Brazil star, meaning the summer is bound to appeal in terms of a move for Luiz.
TBR View: Luiz a quality player to have around but another Arteta could move on
Arteta has praised Luiz’s impact with his relatively young Arsenal side in recent times. And rightly so, his experience is a massive help to those young Gunners around him.
The Arsenal boss faces a big decision though on Luiz. Does he keep him around for that experience? Or does he clear the decks and get another big wage off the books?
We all know what Nuno Gomes would prefer. But this, ultimately, will be down to Arteta.
