Nuno Espirito Santo should try Jota and Jimenez as a partnership

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Nuno Espirito Santo should consider trying out Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez as a strike partnership at some stage.

This term Wolves have been using a 3-4-3 system, with two inside forwards being overlapped by wing-backs and one central striker.

It’s a formation that has yielded relative success, with Wolves sitting comfortably in mid-table after 16 games.

Certainly from a defensive point of view it has been a success, with Wolves currently holding the joint fifth-best defensive record in the Premier League with Everton.

As a result of the hectic Christmas period, Santo dropped Jimenez to the bench against Newcastle United last weekend, with Jota operating through the middle.

It was an interesting tactical switch, which arguably teases a new concept for Wolves fans.

Jimenez and Jota together?

Jota did relatively well against the Magpies in the absence of Jimenez, and appears to have now found his scoring boots this season – it’s two in his last two outings for the Portuguese.

Jota can be threatening through the middle, so perhaps Santo should think about experimenting with a Jota-Jimenez pairing, and changing the team formation to a 3-5-2.

Jimenez has had a great season but sometimes gets isolated.

Playing Jota beside him could potentially increase the team’s goal output significantly.

His playstyle is much different to that of Jimenez, but they could be quite complementary together; Jota’s speed and agility with the Mexican’s strength and aggression.
