Nottingham Forest should hand forgotten man chance to impress in place of suspended midfielder

Nottingham Forest were denied a big three points on Saturday evening when Leeds United scored a controversial late goal at Elland Road.

Striker Kemar Roofe restored parity for the Whites, bundling the ball in with his arm to cancel out Jack Robinson’s opener.

Given the controversial nature of the goal scored by Leeds, some Forest supporters will see it as daylight robbery that they weren’t able to claim all three points on the night. Nonetheless, a point at one of their rivals in the quest for promotion is not to be sniffed at.

One particular disappoint from Forest’s trip to West Yorkshire was the yellow card picked up by Jack Colback, with the influential midfielder now set to serve a one-match ban when the Reds face Sheffield United at the weekend.

It now sparks debate as to who will replace the on-loan Newcastle United man in the middle of the park. The Reds boast lots of quality and it could be any one of potentially four players that replace Colback for the visit of the Blades.

Ben Watson will probably be in pole position to get the nod but Liam Bridcutt is perhaps more befitting of a role alongside Adlene Guedioura in central midfield.

The ex-Leeds United man has waited patiently for a chance this season and he has shown during his League Cup appearances exactly what he can bring to the Forest team if called upon.

The 29-year-old is probably a more like-for-like replacement for Colback than Watson would be, whilst he would probably be a more popular choice with the Forest supporters.

After years of toiling around the bottom regions of the Championship with poor players, it represents a real sign of the times at the City Ground that boss Aitor Karanka is blessed with so much choice withing his ranks.

The Spaniard has shown this season that he won’t select players on reputation alone and whoever does get the nod to replace Colback will know that a good  performance might see them become a regular fixture in the starting line-up.
