‘Nothing for granted’: Ibrox legend sends Rangers warning ahead of key fixture

It’s been a season of domestic dominance for Rangers, but despite the title having been won in March there’s one blemish on their campaign.

A shock 3-2 defeat against St Mirren in December remains their only defeat in Scotland during 2020/21, and it saw them exit the Betfred Cup.

Steven Gerrard’s men return to cup action on Sunday evening against third-tier side Cove Rangers, and one former Ibrox star has urged them to learn from that loss in Paisley.

Nacho Novo won six trophies during his time at the club, and believes they will have to guard against complacency if they are to triumph in this season’s Scottish Cup.

Speaking to , the Spaniard said: “Losing in the League Cup to St Mirren will have shown them that anything can happen.

“Rangers will have thought they could have won that trophy, but that night proved that nothing can be taken for granted and that will help them in the Scottish Cup.

“Every game is a one-off and has to be taken seriously. The most important thing was winning the league this year and they’ve done that.

“But to win the league and cup double would be massive.

“They’ve not only been unbeatable in Scotland but what they did in Europe was amazing and as well as the manager, the players must take credit for doing a fantastic job.

“I’m sure the confidence they will take from winning the league can be carried on into the cup and I’m sure Steven won’t let the standards drop.

“The players are too professional to take their foot off the gas anyway.”

Cove Rangers currently sit second in League One, six points behind Falkirk after 13 matches.

Gerrard’s team, meanwhile, are 20 points ahead of Celtic in the Premiership with five games remaining.

Sunday’s game is a 6.30pm kick-0ff.
